Women in Engineering Taking Charge Through Managing Systems and Operations

Meet Chhaya: An Industrial Engineering Major (IE)

For those of you know don’t know, Industrial Engineers take charge of systems and operations in the big world through by managing organizations such as factories, hospitals… etc. from different approaches. Their job is to build models of complex systems in order to complete their goal of improving organizations’ system performances.

I know you were Undecided Engineering right before you scheduled your classes for your first semester of college this fall; what made you choose Industrial Engineering over the other engineering majors offered within the College of Engineering?

“I picked IE as my major because I liked math and science, but I also like business and dealing with people on a day to day basis. IE gave me the opportunity to do both so I’d thought it would be perfect.”

What academic advice would you give to current Freshman for the rest of the year as well as future incoming Freshman?

“My biggest advice would be to read the textbook. If you’re struggling and you don’t know what to do, read the textbook and do practice. And just when you think you’re done doing practice, do some more practice. That’s the only way you’re going to succeed at Tech.”

Similar to my ME friend Thomas I interviewed a few weeks ago, Chhaya has been a very close friend of mine for many years. The two of us competed together both state-wide and nationally for FBLA this past year so I know from experience that she would dominate in the Business world. As hard-working student, just like the rest of us, so I know she will thrive at this school no matter how hard a Physics or CS class may be. Let’s all hope she makes it big in the real world in just a few short years!!

Now don’t forget to take Chhaya’s advice and study your brains out these last few weeks of this semester because we all know that practice makes perfect.

Check back next week for yet another post!

  1. Hey great job on your blog! I really love your topic because I’m currently conflicted about my major. I was undeclared and now I’m thinking about switching to Industrial Engineering just like the girl in this post! It would be helpful if you could talk about possible companies you could end up working with for each major so we can have a better idea of how the major is applied to real life. Thanks for doing these interviews; they’re really helpful!

  2. I love the idea of your blog and definitely think it has been effective in showcasing the different majors found at Tech in order to help people who are looking for more information on these majors (as seen in the comment before mine 🙂 )! However, I also agree with the previous comment that a little more information about the major would be useful, whether it be the companies one could end up working for or related coursework that the people you are interviewing have completed that show what working in the major would be like. The post before this, about the Computational Media major, was excellent because of the examples you gave of the work you’ve done and information you gave about her studying abroad and the kind of work she produced while studying abroad, so if you had that amount of depth (if possible) on each post, your blog would be unstoppable. Also, including which major is explored in the post in the title so that it appears in the rollover text when mousing over an image on the homepage would be very helpful for new visitors that may be looking for a specific major and don’t know which person coincides with which major based on their picture alone. Besides that, I think that your blog is fabulous and very informational! Keep up the good work 🙂
